Lawsuit asks state to give Lake’s defenders a fair hearing

Several conservation groups seeking to protect the Great Salt Lake have filed a lawsuit against the State of Utah’s Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands. The action, filed in Utah’s Third District Court, asks that the groups be given a fair hearing to dispute land leases given to the Great Salt Lake Minerals company for a major expansion of its operations. The suit contends the Division has failed to uphold the public trust and manage the lake in the best interests of all the people of Utah. So far, the Division has refused to recognize the groups as having a legitimate voice in representing the public.

The Coalition to Keep the Lake Great recently sponsored the publication of “Patterns of Change: Documenting Habitat, Bird and Human Use in Bear River Bay, Particularly the Great Salt Lake Minerals Proposed Expansion Area” by Nicole Anderson. Nicole’s paper highlights the importance of the Bear River Bay Ecosystem and discusses the potential threats posed by the proposed expansion of Great Salt Lake Minerals. The Great Salt Lake Minerals company is proposing a massive expansion of its operations. While some extraction from the Lake is reasonable, this expansion is far more than the Lake can bear. The proposal would increase the company’s footprint by 91,000 acres—a 194% increase over current operations.

Impact: Limited Recreation Access

Already, low lake levels make the Salt Lake Marina virtually useless. Reducing lake levels even further would make many areas of the lake unnavigable by boaters and close down the last remaining marina. Hunters and birdwatchers would have limited access and fewer birds to see.

Impact: Diminished Air Quality

Already Utah has some of the worst particulate air pollution in the nation, and dust storms create a real public health problem for parts of Davis and Weber counties. Enormous new areas of dry lake bed could dramatically worsen particulates in the air we breathe.
